The round table of the Order of the Lamplighters: twelve carved chairs around an oak table in a Gothic chamber of Solephia, with a brass lamp before each chair

The Order of the Lamplighters

In the old cities, the lamplighter walked the streets each evening and lit the lamps, so that no one had to walk in the dark. The Order of the Lamplighters is twelve friends of Solephia who keep its lights burning. Lamplighters are active in Solephia, and they tell the management team what they see there and what could be better.

“You are the light of the cosmos. Shine your light in front of people, exposing your good works so you can give glory to your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:14, 16

Each Lamplighter gives $100 a month. Together, twelve Lamplighters pay for what keeps Solephia running: the website, the research library and the AI that teaches our students and answers their questions. Because of them, what we offer can stay free.

What a Lamplighter Does

  • Gives $100 a month through our giving service.
  • Meets with the President on Microsoft Teams on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time (2:30 p.m. Pacific), for fifteen to thirty minutes.

What a Lamplighter Receives

  • A lamp at the round table, lit beside their name. A Lamplighter’s name is shown only to Citizens of Solephia; everyone else sees “A Friend of Solephia.”
  • A Lamplighter’s pennant. Their pennant beside their name is divided on the diagonal, half white, so every member can see that they keep the lights burning.
  • A voice. Each month the Lamplighters can speak with the President directly and suggest directions for Godhunting Resources, LXON and Solephia.
  • Three memorials a year. Each year a Lamplighter may place three memorials in Solephia Rest, each with a naming plaque, to honor family and friends. Each is free for its first year; after that, its yearly Solis are paid like those of any other memorial.
  • Citizenship. After a year at the table, a Lamplighter becomes a Citizen of Solephia.
  • Two free-book coupons when they take their place at the table.
  • Every year after, on the anniversary of the day they took their place: 100 Solis and another free-book coupon.

Twelve Places

There are never more than twelve Lamplighters. Names at the table are in alphabetical order. Those who have been accepted and are waiting for a place are on the waiting list.

A place passes to the next person on the list after two missed monthly meetings in a row, or two months without a gift. Nobody is chased: a Lamplighter is told first and given time to set things right. When a place ends, the pennant returns to what it was before.

How to Apply

Lamplighters are Christians and members of Solephia. If you are not yet a member, your free Visitor membership comes first. The application asks whether you subscribe to the beliefs of any of the major Christian theological traditions and how you are helping with the work, and a person reads every one.

A Lamplighter is listed in the member directory, with what every directory listing shows. Your name will not be shown except to Citizens of Solephia; everyone else will see “A Friend of Solephia.”

Nothing is charged when you apply. If you are accepted and a place opens, we email you, and your monthly gift begins only when you confirm.
