Genesis 9:18-27. Curse of Canaan

Now the sons of Noah who came out of the chest were Shem, Ham, and Japhet; and Ham was the father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole land was populated.

Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan,[1] saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest grandson had done to him.[2]

So he said,

Cursed be Canaan;

A servant of servants

He shall be to his brothers.

He also said,

Blessed be YHWH,

The Elohim of Shem;[3]

And let Canaan be his servant.

May Elohim enlarge Japheth,

And let him dwell in the tents of Shem;

And let Canaan be his servant.

Footnotes

  1. The details are not given to us. Canaan is cursed, so people speculate that it was something that Canaan did to Noah that caused the curse. ↩
  2. Genesis 9:24: "Youngest grandson" is used, not "son" as in most English translations. The Hebrew word is the same for both "grandson" and "son". Noah cannot be referring to his youngest son, Japheth. Canaan is the son of Noah's middle son, Ham. Ham saw Noah's nakedness. The fact that this was considered evil is evidence that mankind was not always naked. It may be that before the Fall, man was covered with a glorious glow similar to that on Moses' face when he met Elohim. Although Ham saw Noah's nakedness, he was not cursed. When Noah awoke, he knew "what had happened to him," not that his nakedness had been seen. Noah's curse is placed on Canaan. We might guess that Canaan had sexually assaulted him. Sodom and Gomorrah later became cities in the land of Canaan. Eventually YHWH judges Canaan and gives his land to Abraham. ↩
  3. Note that YHWH is the Elohim of Shem, not Japheth. Japheth is the father of nations, like Greece, who recognize a multitude of mythical gods of their own imagination. None of them requires purity and holiness from worshipers. Shem continues the line of the sons of Elohim and is an ancestor of Abraham. ↩

Genesis 9:28-10:32. Noah's family

Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died. Now these are the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood. The sons of Japheth were Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras. The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah. The sons of Javan were Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim. From these the coastlands of the nations were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the land. He was a mighty hunter before YHWH; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before YHWH." The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went forth into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. Mizraim became the father of Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim 14 and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Palestinians) and Caphtorim. Canaan became the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth 16 and the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite 17 and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite 18 and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. The territory of the Canaanite extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.[4]

These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations. Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber,[5] and the older brother of Japheth, children were born. The sons of Shem were Elam and Asshur and Arpachshad and Lud and Aram. The sons of Aram were Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. Arpachshad became the father of Shelah; and Shelah became the father of Eber. Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the land was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. Joktan became the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah 27 and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah 28 and Obal and Abimael and Sheba 29 and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. Now their settlement extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations.

These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations; and out of these the nations were separated on the land after the flood.

Footnotes

  1. The sons of Canaan populate what will become the Land given to "Israel". ↩
  2. Note that Shem is said to be the father of the children of Eber, even though Eber is his great-grandson or perhaps even a later descendant. This example shows that biblical genealogies are selective rather than complete. See note on Genesis 5:1. ↩

Genesis 11:1-9. The Tower of Babel

Now the whole land used the same language and the same words. It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly." And they used brick for stone and tar for mortar. They said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into the skies, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole land."

YHWH came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. YHWH said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another's speech." 8 So YHWH scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole land; and they stopped building the city.[6] 9 Therefore, its name was called Babel, because there YHWH confused the language of the whole land; and from there YHWH scattered them abroad over the face of the whole land.

Footnotes

  1. This is the rebuilding of the city of Cain, the city of the land, the spiritual adversary of God. Cain's city was destroyed in the flood. Babylon will be destroyed before the new skies and the new land come into existence (Revelation 17 & 18). ↩

John 2:1-10. Yeshua's first miracle

On the third day[7] there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Yeshua was there; 2 and both Yeshua and His disciples[8] were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Yeshua said to Him, "They have no wine. "

And Yeshua said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come."[9]

His mother said to the slaves, "Whatever He says to you, do it." Now there were six stone water pots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.

Yeshua said to them, "Fill the water pots with water." So they filled them up to the brim.

And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him.

When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the slaves who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now."

Footnotes

  1. There is much mystery about John's use of the "next day" in previous verses and the "third day" here. A careful study of the Gospel of John suggests that the writer intentionally hid meaning in his text. ↩
  2. His disciples had just abandoned their life with John the Baptist, eating locusts and honey (probably a form of preserved dates). Imagine the contrast when their new teacher takes them from the life of discipleship to an ascetic to a wedding feast. ↩
  3. "Women" was a form of address that showed feeling and tenderness in the Greek language. It seems harsh in English. Yeshua, who is likely the head of the family and keeper of the funds after Joseph's death, is asked by Mary to go and buy wine with the family's funds. He gives her two objections because the solution required a miracle. Although His time had not yet come, He performed a secret miracle known only to His disciples and the slaves who drew the water. It may also have been kept hidden from other disciples, as only John mentions this miracle. ↩

John 2:11-22. Yeshua asserts authority over the Temple

This beginning of His signs Yeshua did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

The Passover[10] of the Jews was near, and Yeshua went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. And He made a scourge of cords,[11] and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME."

The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?"

Yeshua answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

The Jews then said, "It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?" But He was speaking of the temple of His body. So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Yeshua had spoken.

Footnotes

  1. John writes of at least three Passovers celebrated by Yeshua during His ministry. Since John claims to be a truthful witness (John 21:24), it is hard to reconcile this cleansing of the Temple with the cleansings mentioned in other gospels, which clearly occurred at the last Passover. We are not told that John is recounting in chronological order. John likely knows of the other gospels so as not contradicting them. It might be possible that there was more than one cleansing. That means that Yeshua's first cleansing was the winnowing of His threshing floor (the Temple was on a threshing floor purchased by David) predicted by John the Baptist (Luke 3:17). It was accepted by the people and there was no need to re-cleanse the Temple on Yeshua's second ministry Passover. By the third Passover, the doves and money changers had returned, but not the sellers of sheep and oxen. On the other hand, the details are not so far apart that they cannot refer to the same event. There are many sources available to pursue this line of inquiry. However, it is hard to believe that temple authorities would allow Jesus to destroy their businesses more than once. ↩
  2. John 2:15, "made a scourge of cords": It may have taken a day to find the cords and weave them into a whip. It took effort and time to prepare for the cleansing of the temple. The merchants were inside the gates of the Temple and were no doubt paying a fee to the high priest. By evicting them, Yeshua agreed with the Pharisees that the money changing and animal stalls desecrated the Temple. He was also taking income away from the Sadducees. Note that Yeshua does not ask any of his disciples to join a posse and help him. Although the descriptions differ slightly across the three synoptic accounts (Matthew 21:12-17, Mark 11:15-19, and Luke 19:45-48), it was probably the same event. It is unlikely that the Sadducees' temple police would have allowed it twice, and it is a type of the once-for-all cleansing of the heavenly temple (Hebrews 9:23-26). ↩

Psalm 1. Choose righteousness

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

But his delight is in the Torah of YHWH,

And in His Torah he meditates day and night.

He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,

Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;[12]
And in whatever he does, he prospers.

The wicked are not so,

But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.

Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment,[13]

Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For YHWH knows the way of the righteous,

But the way of the wicked will perish.

Footnotes

  1. The righteous will experience hard time but they will continue to persevere and will not be destroyed. ↩
  2. The righteous will be able to stand in the Day of Judgment because they are clothed with His (Yeshua's) righteousness. ↩

Genesis 11:10-28. Genealogy of Shem to Abram

These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood; 11 and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters. Arpachshad lived thirty-five years[14] and became the father of Shelah; 13 and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters. Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber; 15 and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters. Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg; 17 and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters. Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu; 19 and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters. Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug; 21 and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters. Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor; 23 and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters. Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah; 25 and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters. Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

Footnotes

  1. People were marrying around the age of 30. This tradition changed over time. At the time of Yeshua, women married around 12-13 and men in their late teens. ↩
