Vernon Staley (1852–1933)

The Catholic Religion: A Manual of Instruction for Members of the Anglican Church

Vernon Staley was a prominent priest in the Church of England and a significant figure in the later stages of the Anglo-Catholic movement. He served as the Provost of Inverness Cathedral and later as the Rector of Ickford.

Staley was a prolific writer whose work focused on the “High Church” tradition, aiming to provide clear, dogmatic instruction to the laity. He was deeply invested in liturgical correctness and the historical continuity of the Anglican Church as a valid branch of the “One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.” His writing style is characterized by its systematic, instructional, and authoritative tone, which helped bridge the gap between complex Oxford Movement theology and the average parishioner.

The Catholic Religion (c. 1920s Edition)

Originally published in 1893, The Catholic Religion: A Manual of Instruction for Members of the Anglican Church became one of the most influential Anglo-Catholic manuals of the 20th century. The manual serves as a comprehensive guide to the faith, organized into distinct sections:

  • The Church: Defends the “Branch Theory,” arguing that the Anglican Communion is a legitimate part of the Catholic Church alongside the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.

  • The Creeds: Provides a detailed breakdown of the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds as the foundations of Christian dogma.

  • The Sacraments: Offers an Anglo-Catholic interpretation of the seven sacraments, with heavy emphasis on the Real Presence in the Eucharist and the importance of Baptismal Regeneration.

  • The Christian Way of Life: Outlines moral theology, the Ten Commandments, and the “Rule of Life” (prayer, fasting, and almsgiving).

Staley’s work is notable for its use of historical Patristic citations to justify Anglican practices. By the 1920s editions, the book included expanded sections on liturgical vestments, the use of incense, and the calendar of the Church, reflecting the ritualist developments of the era.
